- The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive.
- The award focuses on performance in five key areas:
- Product and process outcomes
- Customer outcomes
- Workforce outcomes
- Leadership and governance outcomes
- Financial and market outcomes
- To receive the award, an organization must have a system that ensures continuous improvement in overall performance in delivering products and/or services.

- California Council for Excellence enables organizations to achieve performance excellence through assessments and training that is aligned to the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program.
- The California Awards for Performance Excellence (CAPE) Program, administered by the California Council for Excellence (CCE), helps organizations in all sectors continuously improve.
- The CAPE program allows organizations to apply for state-level awards and to receive feedback about their current performance and their opportunities for improvement using the nationally recognized Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence.
- In order to be eligible to apply for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, organizations must apply for and receive the highest level of recognition, the CAPE Eureka Gold Award.
